Een Multipurpose Internet Mail Extension, of MIME-type, is een internetstandaard die de inhoud van een verscheidenheid aan bestanden beschrijft. MIME-typen identificeren internetbestanden op basis van hun aard en indeling. Deze catalogus helpt de browser het bestand te openen met de juiste extensie of plug-in. Hoewel de term 'MIME' het woord 'mail' bevat, wordt deze ook voor webpagina's gebruikt.
MIME-typen bevatten twee delen: een type en een subtype.
- De type beschrijft de indeling van MIME-typen die aan elkaar zijn gekoppeld.
- Daarentegen, een subtype is uniek voor een specifiek bestandstype dat deel uitmaakt van het 'type'.

MIME-typen worden in HTML gedefinieerd door de type kenmerk op koppelingen, objecten en script- en stijltags.
Onderscheid maken tussen MIME-typen
Wat volgt is een lijst met de meeste MIME-typen, met hun bestandsextensies en de applicatie die ze gebruikt. Veel computers gebruiken bestandsextensies om de computer te helpen bij het identificeren van het bestandstype. Dus als u een bestand met een vreemde extensie op uw website heeft, kunt u het MIME-type in deze lijst opzoeken.
Sommige typen worden voorafgegaan door X en sommige zijn voorafgegaan door VND. Deze voorvoegsels verwijzen respectievelijk naar subtypen die niet worden vermeld bij de machtiging voor internettoewijzingen of specifieke waarden voor een leverancier.
